Precedence of Styles

In some cases you may specify different style features for the same text through a combination of a linked style sheet, an embedded style tag, and inline style attributes. If these different specifications conflict with one another, the browser must decide which value to use. The choice is made on the basis of an order of precedence (this is what is meant by cascading style sheets).

The order of precedence for cascading style sheets is as follows:

  • inline styles attributes take precedence over embedded style tags
  • embedded style tags in turn take precedence over linked style sheets

It's important to remember this order of precedence so that you'll know which style values will override others.
